Many conservative commentators have been abuzz about President Obama going to Copenhagen and lobbying for Chicago to be the city of the 2016 Olympics. The power of the president's personality did not move the International Olympic Committee who instead chose Rio de Janeiro. Sure this will be a historic first for South America but the IOC rejected Chicago at the first round; clearly they were not impressed with President Obama.
One reason the IOC was probably not impressed with President Obama is that he mostly talked about himself in his speech to them. The word "I" seems to be our president's favorite word. This is a pattern in all President Obama's speeches where he has not been able to transition from the self-promoting mode of a campaign to governing. And this is not to even consider why a junket to boost his Chicago political cronies is more important than fixing our economy or dealing with the Iran and Afghanistan problems.
What happened in Copenhagen brings to mind Proverbs 16:18 which says, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (NKJ). We need to pray for our country and our president that he would seek God's wisdom. We are living in perilous times; not a time to have prideful leaders. Now more than ever humility is in order. As Jesus said, "blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5, NKJ).
